Why You Should Buy Engine Covers for Your Bike

On some bikes, the original stock engine covers on both sides of the engine (usually the clutch cover and the ignition cover) are not nearly strong enough. Some are made out of weak magnesium and if you drop your bike, either the shifter or the brake can easily pierce the cover. The result could be engine oil spilling out all over the place, and you being stranded in the middle of nowhere. That’s why it’s important to level up with engine covers on both sides – for the peace of mind it will bring you. The covers are relatively inexpensive too.

But also, the original clutch or ignition cover can be easily scratched, giving your bike the appearance of heavy use. A new engine cover or clutch case cover will not only protect your engine or original covers from deep scrapes and light scratches but will also improve the look of your bike. Engine covers and clutch covers are designed to protect the engine from damage but also give your bike a stylish appearance. By absorbing the majority of the force when you crash or drop your bike, engine case covers are intended to protect the motor from harm, avoiding expensive repairs and breakdowns. They also offer excellent protection from dust, dirt, and other elements.

What are the Two Covers on My Bike?

Usually, the right side or brake side of the typical motorcycle is the side that helps to contain the engine oil, and the left side or shift pedal side is for the ignition.

Engine Cover vs. Guard Cover vs. Engine Decal

There are three versions of protection for your engine cover. One replaces the original, existing cover. This offers the best protection for the engine, but it’s the most expensive. Another option is to buy an engine cover guard. This type of cover bolts on top of the existing engine case cover that you have on your bike. The advantage is that the guard type is less expensive, but the full replacement ones will offer your engine the most protection. The third option is the engine decal. If you know that your current existing case covers are very strong and will protect your engine, then you could just get a protective decal. This will give your bike a little more impact protection, but mainly it will keep your bike engine cover or clutch cover from getting dinged or scratched.

Materials

Most engine covers are made of molded cast aluminum or cast aluminum alloy. They may be powder coated which adds extra durability. Some engine covers will come with a nitrile-bound gasket with the cover.

The guard is usually made of durable, hard-wearing plastic which is high-temperature resistant.
