Everyone knows it takes a lot of work to get your bike ready for race day. There is a lot of time, prep, and parts going into getting you, or a friend, to the starting gate. Now that I'm thinking about it maybe that will be an upcoming article! What about race day essentials for the rider? Well, we are glad you asked. We put together a list of race-day essentials – these are your must haves.
Jersey: Some are probably thinking that, "Of course you need to have a jersey. Everyone knows that!" What I am talking about though is an extra jersey. Not only for the obvious reason of something happening to your original one, but also for moto two. Riders who have a new jersey for the second moto gives them an edge over the other riders. Feeling refreshed, clean and looking good provides a fresh start and mental clarity you'll want going into second race.
Gloves: This should also be a no-brainer when packing up your equipment for race day. Anyone who has ever ridden or raced knows how easily gloves can be worn down, ripped or torn apart by one crash or fall. Although we know you are smart enough to pack the extra pair, or two, we had to include this in our race-day essential list because, like the jersey, having new and clean gear for moto two will give you an extra motivation you'll be looking for on race day.
Goggles: Goggles are not as obvious when it comes to packing a secondary. I recommend having a back-up pair in case something were to happen to them. If there is one thing you can count on when it comes to racing is, it is to expect the unexpected. Always better to be over prepared, than under. When it comes to race day essentials we recommend a back-up pair of goggles, extra lenses and plenty of tear-offs.
Pants: Pants are, of course, a must have for race day. Having an extra pair is always nice but not necessary. We have all experienced problems with our pants whether them fitting incorrectly or having a broken buckle, so if you want to be prepared bring a spare or keep living life on the edge.
Socks: Lastly, and in my opinion most importantly, socks! We all know we need to have them but it's important to make sure the ones you have are comfortable. There is nothing worse than blisters or socks that don't fit well. We have attached a link of socks we recommend and guarantee will provide the comfort and support you need on your next race day.
Besides the given essentials we listed above, what else does a rider need to be prepared for race day? We recommend eating a good, quality and healthy breakfast before arriving to the track. Make sure to pack a cooler with plenty of liquids, snacks and food to help get you through the day. Most days at the track consist of abundant heat and possible dehydration, so it's important to bring plenty of water and other liquids to help keep your body hydrated. Do not forget some good snacks, protein bars and a solid lunch to get you fuelled up between motos. Lastly, you want to make sure you bring a chair, or something equivalent, to sit down and relax. It is important to get ample rest between motos.
If you have gone through this checklist and have everything you need, then you are ready for race day. Only thing left to pack is your mental strength and need for speed.
