Turn yourself into a mechanic!

· 2 minutes read

If you ride or race a dirt bike, it's very likely that you are passionate and enjoy watching the sport as well. Maybe you are not the fastest competitor or have the tools it takes to become one of the top riders, but that doesn’t mean you can't become more involved in the industry. One of the quickest way to increase your knowledge of the sport and get more involved is to become a mechanic. Racer’s depend so much on their mechanic to make sure their dirtbike is operating at optimal level. Mechanics are trained to know the bike inside and out. At the end of the day it takes a team to win a championship.

As a mechanic you will learn terms, tricks and operating systems on such a deep level. You will ultimately obtain a completely different aspect on racing and the parts that are involved in it. Sound like something that's of interest to you? Good, we had hoped so…

The truth is it’s something the sport needs more of. It is going to take time, patience, training and lots of work. But nothing worth having happens overnight and becoming a mechanic is not an exception to that rule. To be a mechanic you need to be driven, passionat and hard-working… The same qualities it takes to become a professional racer.

#1: Be Motivated

The best mechanics are the ones who are motivated to grow with the sport. With new products being put on the market and constantly-changing bikes, a mechanic must always be looking to gain more knowledge when it comes to the MX industry.

#2: Practice

Practice really does make perfect. If you want to be one of the best you have to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. That means put it together and take it apart. The more you practice, the more familiar you become with the moving and stationary objects of a motorcycle. The more you practice, the more you understand how and why things work the way they do.

#3: Watch Others

As an aspiring mechanic you can always learn from others. Whether that be in person or online. There is so many useful tools online, like YouTube that allow you to access videos of others explaining how to do things. You can also make your own YouTube channel where you can show off your skills as well. As well as videos there are plenty of articles, like this one that help you better understand your craft. To be a good mechanic you must immerse yourself in all the platforms.

#4: Go To School

The best way to learn anything is to do it often and with the help of trained professionals. Classrooms and instructors offer this knowledge that will help you to achieve your goal of being a mechanic. MMI or the Motorcycle Mechanic Training Program offers one of the most intensive schools out there. It is where many mechanics have gone in order to be skilled in their industry. MMI teaches you not only how to be a mechanic for dirt ikes, as you can also focus on ATV or road motorcycles.
