Summer is almost here and we all know what that means… Racing time! It's an exciting time for any motocross racer when the temperature increases and the number of local races seem to increase. Something about it usually motivates the racer inside of all of us and pushes us to get back out to the track. Before you hit the track, however, and race your way into that first turn, here are a couple tips to help you with your racing season.

Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast: Any good racer knows that consistency is key and it's better to put in steady laps with limited mistakes as opposed to fast laps with a ton of errors. Focusing more on your technique and not on your speed will drastically improve your race results in the long run. Plus by doing this you will unknowingly become faster and smoother in a more natural pace and will build confidence in your riding style.

Jumping for Show, Cornering for Dough: I know one of the first things we think about when we arrive to a track is how we are going to clear all of the jumps on track and not look like a wimp in front of our friends, but we can't forget that jumping is not where races are won. Races are won in the corners! You look at any top pro and you'll see how much time they have perfected their entry speed, lean angle, body position, foot placement etc. The crazy thing is when you perfect your turns, jumps become easy due to the speed you'll be caring in from your corning skills.

Love and Motorcycles: A lot of times when we are training or practicing for a race or event, it's easy to lose track on having fun. Sometimes you get so caught up in your diet, rest, workout program or lap times that we forget why we got into the sport in the first place. Make sure that you take time to just go out, ride your bike and let loose. Motocross is one of those great sports that you can find peace in a dangerous situation. There is nothing better than just getting on your bike, clearing your mind and enjoying the ride. The funny part is you usually ride well when you do this.

All in all, it's very exciting to get a race schedule together for the summer season coming up and to set some new goals for your riding career. We all have to remember that we are never too good for the basics. Sometimes the best thing you can do at the start of our season is to focus on the fundamentals and let the speed come back naturally over time. This prevents you from ending your season before it even starts and also allows you to enjoy the sport of motocross that we have all grown to love.
