We all know that owning a dirt bike is a lot more than just loading your bike up in the back of your truck, riding from sunrise to sundown, loading it back up and putting it back in your garage. It's not like your car where you can go thousands and thousands of miles prior to you even worrying about a single mechanical thing. To keep your motorcycle running at its peak performance, you need to do regular maintenance and upkeep. Now we know that not everyone is a fan of always working on their bike or having to fix things, but I think we can all agree that we much rather have a bike that's running than a broken bike sitting in your garage.

With that said, here are a couple mechanical task you can do to keep your bike running the way you like it. First off: Clean your air filter! A dirty air filter can suck and that's why it's crucial to make sure that you regularly clean it thoroughly, let it dry properly and then soak it with air-filter oil. Now this isn't the cleanest of jobs to do, but it is important. I like to clean my air filter after each time I wash my bike or at least check it. I also recommend wearing some medical-type gloves you can easily throw away whilst doing this task because, like I said, this is not a clean job to do… It is messy. The benefits of having a clean air filter are worth it. Cleaner air filter means cleaner air into the engine, which means better compression and that means you go faster. I think we all like that!

Another good component on the bike that's always good to check is the chain and sprocket. A lubricated chain is a happy chain and you will see the rewards of proper care in the long run with a longer chain life. You should always clean the chains and sprocket after riding and add lubrication when needed. You don't ever want to ride with a dry chain or sprocket! Check for any wear or tear that might be developing on these components, because they are crucial to the bike's overall performance.

A simple, but sometimes overlooked, task is checking and tightening your spokes. Obviously your wheels are extremely important to your bikes overall performance. I mean without them we really wouldn't get far, so that is why something as simple as making sure each spoke is nice and snug to the rim is so important. This isn't a task that should be rushed though. This takes time and patience to make sure everything is where it needs to be. I recommend that you tighten every third spoke, which means you spin the wheel around three times. This will make the process much smoother.

At the end of the day we all want to ride our bike, but sometimes before we do that we have to make sure everything is in the right spot. That's why regular maintenance is so important. Now obviously there are way more things you can check on your bike to make sure that it's where you want it, but these are just three very simple tasks you can do each and every time you ride that will make your bike life much longer.
